Detailed guide: Civil Service orientation

Around one-in-five senior leaders are externally recruited on entry to the SCS, bringing a wealth of experience gained through their career outside the Civil Service. The Leadership Academy can support senior leaders who are new to the organisation through our ‘Civil Service Orientation’ offer, which will help leaders understand the political context and core business of the Civil Service, expand their networks, and navigate the unique environment we operate in.

The political context

A suite of workshops and seminars to develop and broaden understanding of the core Civil Service discipline of politics, delivered in partnership with parliament. These events will enable you to work more effectively with Ministers, increase your understanding of parliamentary procedures, and understand the political context.

Pairing scheme

The Leadership Academy can pair you with an experienced peer from outside your Department, to provide a broader context to your induction and help expand your networks. Drawing from the experience of other senior leaders is an essential way to get to grips with life in the Civil Service, and an experienced peer can provide insights into the wider cultures and practices of the organisation. This website provides a set of resources to help familiarise you with the Civil Service, and its past, current and future contexts. This will broaden your understanding of how the Civil Service works and the role of civil servants, the reform agenda, and key processes.

Networking events

The Leadership Academy hosts quarterly events for new Senior Civil Service recruits, to meet their peers, share information, and draw from the experience of others in a senior role. Each event is hosted by a Senior Civil Service leader, who will share their insights and experiences of the organisation. In addition we will signpost new recruits to external events that offer valuable insights and networking opportunities for those new to the Civil Service.
