Civil Service leaders have a role of unparalleled complexity in a world that is increasingly global, complex and ambiguous. Leading in this environment can mean the human element is forgotten at the expense of the intellectual and technocratic. We have created an opportunity to test that leadership at its limits, providing a confidential space to develop responses to the challenges public leaders will encounter.
The Leadership Academy immersive learning series is sponsored by Clare Moriarty, Permanent Secretary at Defra. The series helps leaders develop more effective leadership practice through participation in 24-hour experiences that are built around genuine Civil Service case studies. Participants are fully immersed in responding to a recent, relevant, real life situation in which there is no right answer, and hear honest accounts of the human experience of leading in these moments.
Each event focuses on a specific capability, and participants will come away with priorities for action in the workplace, a support network of like minded people, and further opportunities to reflect and build upon the learning. Each event has been co-developed by Civil Service leaders alongside experts in learning and leadership development, and this format creates a unique opportunity for learning:
Personally I found this course inspirational. The access to expertise and senior leaders in the Civil Service was a privilege. It made me want to stay in the Civil Service and it made me proud. Thank you.
Listening and talking to people who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership through complex and challenging situations - in a human, honest, authentic way, yet structured around a clear case study - was mind opening, inspiring and surely the most successful way to teach leadership.
